The Old Bridge, officially known as the Karl Theodor Bridge, is a historic sandstone bridge crossing the Neckar River, connecting Heidelberg's old town with the Neuenheim district. As one of the city's most iconic landmarks, it offers impressive views of the old town, the castle, and the Neckar.
The Karl Theodor Bridge was built between 1786 and 1788 under Elector Karl Theodor, replacing several earlier wooden structures that were frequently destroyed by floods. Its robust sandstone construction made it the first permanent bridge at this site. To this day, it remains a defining feature of Heidelberg's cityscape.
The Old Bridge is a classically designed stone bridge with a total of nine arches, spanning approximately 200 meters. Notable features include the two prominent bridge towers on the old town side, which were once part of Heidelberg's medieval city fortifications. Another highlight is the famous “Bridge Monkey” sculpture - a popular photo spot for visitors.
From the Old Bridge, you can enjoy stunning views of Heidelberg Castle and the old town with the Church of the Holy Spirit.
